Scion TRD FR-S Project Car

Toyota USA had created a 3-part video series to showcase the development and built process of their custom built Scion TRD FR-S project car. This project was inspired by the Griffon Toyota 86 built by TRD’s Japanese division and was completed with the support from Evasive Motorsports, GReddy Performance, Toyota Technocraft, TRD and KMA Productions. The Scion FR-S was stripped entirely before it was given a Yuzu Yellow paintjob. KMA Productions then installed the TRD Japan coilover system, custom fabricated roll cage, 3-piece wheels and lots of other TRD parts including a big brake kit, steering wheel, shift knob and bucket seats into the bright yellow body. The FA20 2.0 boxer engine also received upgrades from GReddy and the output of the engine was increased to around 300bhp. Upon completion, the Scion TRD FR-S was brought to the Irwindale Speedway for a test drive with Scion Formula Drift racing driver Ken Gushi. The Scion FR-S Release Series 1.0 was inspired by this Scion TRD FR-S project car.

Toyota GT86 CS-R3 Rally Car To Debut At Rallye Deutschland

toyota-gt86-rally-csr3

The Toyota GT86 CS-R3 rallycar will be making its public debut at ADAC Rallye Deutschland next month. Germany based Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) had developed the GT86 CS-R3 to help Toyota return to its rallying roots with a rear-wheel-drive car. The Toyota GT86 CS-R3 weights only 1080kg and features an upgraded version of the FA20 2.0 boxer engine with updated software, a higher compression ratio and changes to the cam lift to produce between 240-250bhp. All the power will be sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox. The GT86 CS-R3 will also feature a FIA-homologated roll cage. The car is set to compete in the World Rally Championship’s R3 class but it will not compete against the clock in Rallye Deutschland. Instead, it will be used as a zero car in the hands of Isolde Holderied to conduct safety checks on each stage before the rally cars go on their timed runs. Isolde Holderied will also help to evaluate the car, which is currently still a prototype, to help improve the design to meet the R3 homologation specifications. Watch the car undergoing testings below.

German drifter Harald Müller sets a new Guinness record in Turkey for the longest recorded drift in his modified Toyota GT86 after driving it sideways for 2 hours and 25 minutes. The track used is only 0.14 miles long and water was sprayed onto it constantly to help keep the tires in one piece for the stunt. The total distance recorded by Müller was 89.55 miles, beating the previous record of 51.2 miles set by Johan Schwartz in a BMW M5 and earning Müller a Guiness World Record.

Lightweight, Track-focused Toyota GT86 Spotted Testing At The Nurburgring

A Toyota GT86 prototype was recently spotted testing at the famous Nurburgring racetrack  in Germany wearing a series of visible carbon fiber upgrades. Visible upgrades seen on the car include a new carbon fiber front splitter, carbon fiber bonnet, carbon fiber boot lid, carbon fiber roof, a massive carbon fiber rear wing as well as new racing wheels and tyres. Following the recent upgrade on the GT86 which features stiffer suspension for better handling, we suspect that this lightweight hardcore model will be heading in the same direction without any upgrades in power. It was speculated that Toyota could release this hardcore track ready GT86 as a limited run-out special edition before ending the production of the GT86 to focus on the development of the Toyota Supra successor.
