Mercedes-AMG GT Officially Launched

03

Mercedes-AMG had officially launched their second fully in-house developed vehicle: the Mercedes-AMG GT. Built as the successor to the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, the new Mercedes-AMG GT sits on a brand new aluminium chassis which is lighter and more well-balanced compared to the SLS AMG. Gone are the iconic gullwing-doors found on the SLS AMG but Mercedes-AMG GT looks bulkier and more muscular with more bold lines along the body. The interior is more driver centered as all the buttons and dails were arranged to face the driver. The new Mercedes-AMG GT will be available in two trims boasting different outputs from the new M178 4.0 V8 Biturbo AMG engine:  the AMG GT will have 462hp and 600 Nm of torque while the AMG GT S will have 510hp and 650 Nm of torque. Power will be transferred to the rear wheels via a revised Geartrac 7-speed dual clutch transmission system which helps to launch the GT S 0-100km/h in 3.8-seconds and hitting a top speed of 310km/h. Despite being turbocharged, the Mercedes-AMG GT sounds absolutely brutal as it comes standard with an AMG performance exhaust system with fully variable exhaust flaps controllable from inside the cabin. Mercedes-AMG is expected to announce the pricing of the new Mercedes-AMG GT and GT S by October.

Affalterbach unveils its latest creation, a new 4.0 V8 Biturbo engine by AMG codenamed M178. As the replacement for the recently retired M156 6.3 V8 found in the SLS AMG and C63 AMG, it follows the current trend of being smaller but more efficient in order to satisfy the emission regulations set by the European Union. The first Mercedes-Benz to adopt this engine will be the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GT, Mercedes’s replacement for the SLS AMG and Porsche 911 beater. Running on a pair of Borg Warner turbos with 2.3 bar of boost, it produces 503hp at 6250 rpm and 479 lb-ft of torque between 1750 and 4750 rpm. Like all AMG engines, every single unit will be hand built according to the ‘one man, one engine’ method by a group of trained mechanics at AMG. Mercedes-Benz even made a video to show the details of the engine.
